DNR Approves Permit for Equestrian Creek Crossing - Nov 5, 2006

On October 26, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water approved the Vandalia Trail's permit to construct an equestrian crossing through Crittenden Creek. This is the key feature that is needed in order to open the Vandalia Trail to horseback riding. Amy Inman, chairperson of the Vandalia Trail Equestrian Committee, assembled and submitted the in depth application to DNR, guided by significant technical input from Yvette Rollins of the Indiana Horse Council. The Indiana Horse Council also donated the $250 application fee.

Construction work will consist of stabilizing the creek banks and the gravel bottom creek bed, creating a gradual grade into and out of the creek, and improving drainage from the nearby elevated railroad bed. Fundraising and construction planning will be performed during the winter of 2007 and construction will begin as soon as the weather permits. Completion of this creek crossing and equestrian amenities in Amo and Coatesville are now the top priority for the Vandalia Trail, so that the trail can be opened to horseback riding later in 2007.
